When you arrive, enter the DHS Fine Arts Center and you will be directed to the Blackbox Theatre (Room B115). Elementary students: please wait to enter campus until 3:45, when high school dismissal traffic has cleared. Middle School and DFC students should ride their respective Dorman Activity Bus.
I recommend you join our Dorman Theatre remind group: @dtdkids and follow Dorman Theatre on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for all upcoming information about Mary Poppins and all the other awesome events we have planned this year.
Please note: attending a workshop does not guarantee that you are cast in the musical. In order to secure a place in our musical, you must attend auditions. This production is different from Annie and Wizard of Oz since the cast will mainly consist of 7-12 graders with roles open for only a few younger students, much like Shrek. There are 2 lead roles for 3-6 graders in Mary Poppins: Jane and Michael Banks. These parts are extremely demanding and will require a lot of time and effort on the part of the actors and parents to be successful. We also plan to cast three to four 3-6 graders in the ensemble, which is not as demanding.
Auditions are scheduled for January 14 and 15. You may choose to audition either day. Do not come both days. Auditions will consist of singing and dancing. Enter the DHS Fine Arts Center and you will be directed to the Blackbox Theatre (Room B115). Elementary students: please wait to enter campus until 3:45, when high school dismissal traffic has cleared. Middle School and DFC students should plan to ride their respective Dorman Activity Bus.
Please prepare a song of your choice to perform that showcases your voice. Sing the best part of the song. You don't have to start at the beginning. Pick the part you sing best! You will need a karaoke (instrumental) version of your song on a device to play as you sing. I do not recommend singing without music as it is very easy to get off pitch and/or off rhythm. Please do not sing a song from Mary Poppins. Regarding song selection: please select an upbeat Broadway musical song or a song from the Golden Era of movie musicals (circa 1945-1965). Mary Poppins the Musical was written by Sherman and Sherman with additional songs by Drewe and Stiles. Research songs written by them! However, this is just a suggestion. If you have already been working on a song, do not change it now!
In addition to singing this song, you will review and perform the dance. Here are the links for the dances:

Select students that we might consider for lead roles will be asked to audition a second time at “Callbacks”, which will be held January 17. At that time, students will be asked to sing a specific song from Mary Poppins and read some lines from the script. Your audition on January 14 or 15 will determine whether we need to hear you again on January 17. That list will be sent out on January 16, to the email address you provide on your audition registration.
Mary Poppins performances are scheduled for April 18-20, 2019. Students will not be required to rehearse during Spring Break.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
